2017 - Article will be updated for 2018 when the dates have been finalized

If its September, its must be time for square Dance Lessons.

This year we have two West Columbia Clubs offering lessons.  The Star Promenaders will offer lessons beginning on Sept 7 on Thursday evenings.  The Tanglefoots will offer lessons beginning on Sept 18 on Monday evenings.

These lessons will take place weekly and normally end in January - the exact ending date is determined by the progress of the class.  You may join either the Monday night lessons or the Thursday night lessons.  You can also attend both nights.  There are a number of advantages to taking lessons from different instructors.  One is that you get more practice and second each instructor teaches and explains things differently so what you may not have understood from one instructor you will pick up from the other.  While you have the option to take lessons from both clubs, each club has its own lesson plan - so you can not go 4 weeks to one club and then go 4 weeks to the other.   Piick one night or if you are going to go both nights, plan to attend both nights consistently.

Some general information and questions we get about lessons:

The biggest concern I hear is that one has two left feet.  Square dancing is not about your feet.  It is about the ability to walk and follow instructions.  If you can walk forward, backwards, turn left or right and hold hands and circle to the left or right - you can square dance.  It also requires that you be able to hear the commands.  If you wear a hearing aid, please wear it to the lessons.  You don't need to bring anything else - except for a positive attitude and a willingness to learn to dance.

Another issue I hear is I don't have a partner.  Come anyway.  We do our best to ensure that everyone has a partner.  We always need more men.  Please ask around and invite as many men as you can to come and take lessons.

Can my child learn to dance?  As long as they are at least 9 years old and they want to learn to square dance - bring them.  They learn faster than the adults.  But if they are not interested in dancing, please don't force them - it's not fair to them and to everyone else.  Also keep in mind, that these classes are in the evenings and we need to ensure that the children have enough sleep before going to school the next day.

What do I wear?  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.  After the first couple of lessons, you will learn what works best for you.  I will be wearing shorts and tennis shoes.  Some dancers will dress up.  During the lessons, you decide on how dressed up you want to be.  Once lessons are over and you begin attending club dances, we will ask that you dress up.  This does not require that you go out and buy new outfits - just don't come in shorts and T-Shirts.

The first few lessons teach the very basics.  If you cannot make the first lesson, don't worry, come on out to the second or third.   Your first lesson is free.  You pay as you go.  There are no advanced payments required.  If you find that you miss a lesson, come to the next.  The lessons always review what happened the previous week.

There are no Advance or Preregistration.  Simply come to the lessons.  Don't worry, there is no limit on the number of students that can attend the class.

If you have Square Danced in the past, come out and relearn.  We have many people take lessons who danced 20-30 years ago.

We do ask that there be no smoking and no alcohol.
